Tron Legacy

Ick. Maybe when the first one came out, the special effects and idea were cutting edge but now it was just hard to follow and boring. :(

The Day the Earth Stood Still 2008

Not nearly as good as the original...they must have had Al Gore as an advisor.

Blade Runner: The Final Cut

Well, this blade cuts both ways...ha ha. Ahem.

I don't like movies like BladeRunner that have that dark film noir quality of the future.....I think the main reason that I'm such a Star Trek and Star Wars fan is that in ST, there is a utopian vision of the future; and in SW, even though the future is in question, there is always Hope.....just like the extended title to the original says, "A New Hope."

BladeRunner, Escape from NY and other movies of the kind really make me depressed......they are dark and morality is ambiguous at best.

Maybe I'm more of a black and white kind of girl....I like the good guys to be good guys and the bad guys to be bad.

I also like the moniker that one journalist used to describe the movie which I find quite apt: Blade Crawler.......what is it about so called 'cult' films that make them have to move so slow??

Take Dune for example......man, I'm lucky if I can ever make it thru one of these slow moving, future killing, spirit depressing flicks. As for Dune, it sure ain't no Tremors ;)

Rocky Horror Picture Show

Well, I tried to watch this film again and still could not make it thru to the ending.

I did watch it at home by myself; so I understand that crowd participation is part of the whole experience....so I realize that if I saw it with a group, I most likely would not object to the openly offensive parts of the film; such as, Tim Curry's role as a transvestite from Transylvania.....which of course has a double meaning in the film since Transylvania turns out to be not the country but something altogether different.

I realize that these films are made exactly to put your brain on hold and participate in order to have fun; but I still have problems not reacting negatively to offensive elements.

Another movie that had offensive elements in it that I did watch with a group after not being able to finish by myself was PeeWee's Playhouse or whatever it was called. I watched it with a group of friends in Auburn that turned it more into an episode of Mystery Science Theatre 3000 than a stupid movie that had no plot made by a convicted pedophile wearing makeup.

I wonder what it is about being in a group that turns off our frontal lobe. Hrm.

Inside man

Oh I remember seeing this movie for the first time. And loved the ending. I love when the bad guys truly get theirs...and when the real bad guys aren't who you think!

Clive Owen, Jodie Foster and Denzel don't hurt either....even though I thought Denzel's character was a bit rough around the edges....but I think that was by design. ;)

Oh and I didn't remember how may curse words were in the movie either.....but it was interesting to watch on cable with all the silent spots. It was kind of like watching Nick Saban taking Jesus' name in vain on the sidelines yesterday against LSU; you know what he is saying even if you cannot hear it.

Good flick with a twist!

What's Your Favorite Scary Movie?

"Showgirls!"

I must say that Scream is one of my favorite scary movies....and it is both scary and campy and that is what makes it one of my faves....just like Lake Placid, the funniest movie that is supposed to be scary.

On Halloween, I stayed home and watched 100 Scariest Movie Moments.....number one? Well, Jaws of course! Name one person who has seen Jaws who hasn't thought twice about entering the ocean ;)

The original Halloween was also on the top 10....and with good reason: it was the first slasher flick to use music as a plot device.....and reinvented the genre.

I lean more towards the old tyme scary flicks: Dracula with Bela Lugosi, Frankenstein with Boris Karloff and the original Fly with Vincent Price. I also love the movies that AMC used to show on MonsterVison.....THEM! is a classic scary movie with a sci-fi edge. And who could forget the original Blob with Steve McQueen? A big red growing blob eating everything in sight in a small town in the 50's.....makes me just squeal with delight ;)

Oooooo, the original Invasion of the Body Snatchers!!!! It and the remake are both great movies!

Remakes usually really mess up the original's intent....except in the case of The Thing......who can forget James Arness as the original monster?? Maybe those who saw Kurt Russell battle a space invader that takes over all the people at an Arctic research station!

The problem with remakes is that they try to take the gore factor to a whole new level to make up for the lack of an original idea for a movie......just like the Texas Chainsaw Massacre remake.....take an already gory movie and up the ante to gross a new generation of kids out.

I must admit that one sub-genre that I can't get into are the new Japanese gory movies....number 3 on the list was a movie I had never heard of called "Audition" about a woman serial killer who was using accupunture needles to subdue victims while she tortured them. That and the Ring (Ringu in Japanese); I never could really get into those.

I must say that I tend to put serial killer movies like Silence of the Lambs into the thriller category rather that the scary movie category.....and I tend to put The Thing and The Blob into Sci Fi.

And then I also have a whole different category for torture movies like Saw.....ick.

So some of the movies on the list really surprised me, especially Jaws at number one; but it did make sense once I thought about it. :) You can see the link here for more info: http://www.bravotv.com/The_100_Scariest_Movie_Moments/index.shtml

Let me know your thoughts!

The Break Up

I really hated this movie....it had some good parts such as, "I want you to want to do the dishes!" and the response, "Why would I want to do the dishes?!"

Shows the difference between Mars and Venus....albeit in a frat boy context.

National Treasure

A nation wide treasure hunt with cool clues that only an American history buff would appreciate and a goal only accomplished by committing grand larceny and possibly treason.....add an all star cast headed by Nicolas Cage and posthumously Ben Franklin....what's not to love??

Freaky Friday

I must say, I love Jamie Lee Curtis! If you watch this movie closely, you will see the wide range that she has as an actor. (Yeah, I know....it's a kid flick.) Another movie that I think shows her range is True Lies.

Ms. Curtis seems to be such a stable personality with a good head on her shoulders...and she can make fun of herself like she does in this movie ;)

Who would have thought that the former 'Scream queen' would be such a 'scream' to watch.

James Bond

Just finished watching The World is Not Enough and Tomorrow Never Dies.....my sister thinks, with most of the rest of the world, that Sean Connery is the best James Bond ever....but I think that Pierce Brosnan had major potential.....too bad he opted out.

I remember that they also love Daniel Craig's re-imagined James Bond.....me not so much. He is a more kick-ass Bond but that is not what I think of when I think of Bond....I think of a suave, sophisticated spy rather than a blood-thirsty killing machine.

Ah, the times....they are a-changin' again.

Sphere-d thru the heart!

Movie title: Sphere
Cast: Dustin Hoffman, Samuel L. Jackson, Sharon Stone, Peter Coyote, Queen Latifah, Liev Schriber, James Pickens

How in the world can you go wrong with that cast??? I have no idea, but this movie sure did.

There are a couple of great lines in it even:
When Samuel L. Jackson finds out that Dustin Hoffman's character is a psychologist who wrote the protocol for first contact with aliens that they are carrying out, he intones: "So now little green men are saying, 'Take me to your therapist?!'."

The Movie Buff Bunny's Reel Opinion

Well, my family began to go to movies every Friday about 12 years ago. We like Action best but I am more eclectic ;) at least sometimes!

I will post reviews of what I have seen this year here. Feel free to comment! (But please keep it clean and respectful :).

2005:
Resident Evil: Apocalypse
Well, I love the first one and this one was an ok follow-up to the original. However, the first seemed to draw you into the characters more rather than going for gore and shock value. My poor Dad was so lost from the get-go, even though he had seen the first with me. I also had a friend who walked out within the first 15 minutes due to the gore factor.

It was interesting how they tied the two movies together; but you definately have to have seen the first one to understand what was going on with the characters. I did not like the fact that they made the heroine into a mutant but I guess it followed the premise of the first. Oh well, if you can handle the gore, it is a good action movie. And of course, with the ending, there will definately be a sequel.

** out of 5 stars

Troy:
Ok, this plodding Epic we watched for a week today ;) It took forever to get into the characters even though they were taken from Homer's Illiad. I think they were trying for the special effects rebound of the Lord of the Rings trilogy, but it missed except for massing over 1000 ships and thousands of CGI soldiers.
Too long......too intertwined and twisted....too hard for some to follow.

* out of 5 stars (just because it wasn't totally boring).
